Support Coordination: What Does It Cost — and Who Pays?
If you’re new to the NDIS or exploring additional supports, you might be wondering:
How much does Support Coordination cost? And will it come out of my NDIS funding?
Let’s break it down.
What Is Support Coordination?
Support Coordination is a capacity-building support that helps participants make the most of their NDIS plans. A Support Coordinator works with you to:
- Understand and implement your plan
- Connect with the right providers
- Coordinate services and manage bookings
- Build your skills and confidence to manage supports more independently
It’s especially helpful for:
- Participants with more
complex needs
- Those with a
new diagnosis
- People who are
struggling to connect with supports
Anyone feeling overwhelmed by the NDIS process or unsure where to start
Is Support Coordination Funded by the NDIS?
Yes — but only if it’s included in your plan.
Support Coordination is not automatically given to everyone. It needs to be
requested during your planning meeting or plan review, and the NDIA must
approve it.
If approved, funding for Support Coordination will appear under the Capacity Building – Support Coordination budget.
You don’t pay out of pocket for this support; it comes from this specific funding category and doesn’t affect your Core or other Capacity Building supports like therapy or employment.
How Much Does It Cost?
NDIS sets a price limit for Support Coordination services, which varies depending on the level of support you need.
As of 2024:
- The typical hourly rate for a
Level 2 Support Coordinator (most common) is
$100.14/hour.
- Level 3 (Specialist Support Coordination) is billed at a higher rate due to the complexity involved — typically around
$190+/hour.
Support Coordinators claim directly from the NDIS portal, so you won’t receive invoices or need to manage payments (unless self-managed).
Note: Always check the latest NDIS Pricing Arrangements (formerly Price Guide) for updates.
Do I Need a Plan Manager to Have a Support Coordinator?
No — you don’t.
You can have a Support Coordinator regardless of whether your plan is
NDIA-managed,
plan-managed, or
self-managed. Their job is to support you in making the most of your plan, regardless of how your funding is managed.
Can I Choose My Own Support Coordinator?
Yes!
If you have Support Coordination included in your plan, you have the freedom to choose a provider that aligns with your values, communicates well, and understands your goals.
At Hand in Hand, we focus on building strong, respectful relationships and creating personalised strategies because no two participants are alike.
