A Guide to the NDIS

Hand in Hand Support Coordination • November 7, 2024

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to support individuals with disabilities, including those with mental health needs, helping them live more independently, achieve their goals, and access essential services. The NDIS also provides resources and assistance for families and carers, enabling them to better support their loved ones.

What is the NDIS?

Understanding NDIS Accreditation

Being an NDIS-accredited organisation means that NDIS Providers such as Hand in Hand Support Coordination meets the National Standards set by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). This accreditation confirms our commitment to safety, risk management, and delivering quality services.

Why Does Accreditation Matter?

Choosing an NDIS-accredited provider like Hand in Hand Support Coordination ensures peace of mind. You can trust that we are committed to:

  • High-quality services and best industry practices
  • Strong participant and community engagement
  • Respect for diversity and inclusion
  • Continuous improvement to create positive outcomes

How to Apply for the NDIS

To join the NDIS, you must first meet specific eligibility requirements. If you’re already receiving disability support, the NDIA will contact you when the scheme is available in your area. If not, you need to request an Access Request Form by contacting the NDIS at 1800 800 110.

During the application process, you will:

  • Confirm your identity or have someone act on your behalf.
  • Answer questions to determine if you meet the access criteria.
  • Provide evidence of your disability.

Am I Eligible for the NDIS?

Eligibility for the NDIS requires:

  • A permanent disability that significantly impacts your daily activities.
  • Australian citizenship, permanent residency, or a Special Protected Category visa.
  • Being under 65 at the time of applying (continued support is available after 65 if already in the scheme).

You must be prepared to provide information about your disability, its permanence, and how it affects your life. Children under 7 may need additional early intervention evidence.

What Evidence is Needed for NDIS Eligibility?

When applying, provide clear, recent (within 6-12 months) evidence of your disability, such as:

  • Type of disability and diagnosis date
  • How the disability impacts daily functioning
  • Treatment history and future options

This evidence should be from a relevant treating health professional, such as a GP, Paediatrician, Occupational Therapist, or Psychologist, who knows your condition well.  The NDIA is responsible for determining who is eligible to access the NDIS, find out more
